Drink-fuelled thug in threats to kill police officers

- Court reporter

A violent thug who threatened to kill Coatbridge cops and resisted arrest has been placed under supervision.

Boozed-up Brian Main turned on the officers when they were called to his home by his terrified daughter.

Main, 48, had placed the woman in a state of fear and alarm by shouting, swearing and uttering violent threats.

When the Coatbridge officers attended the scene, Main initially refused to provide details on his identity to the constables before verbally threatening them and making his arms rigid to try to evade arrest.

Main was eventually taken to Coatbridge police office – following a trip to Monklands Hospital to deal with his level of intoxication – and later owned up to his disgraceful conduct at Airdrie Sheriff Court.

After background reports were completed, Main, of Cumbernauld, returned to the dock last week, when procurator fiscal Yolande Love said: “The accused had been consuming alcohol and an argument broke out between him and his daughter.

“He began shouting and swearing and tried to remove her from the property. She contacted the police and told them she was concerned due to his intoxicated state.

“When the police arrived, the accused shouted, ‘f*** off’ and‘ get to f***’.

“He was advised to calm down and then told officers, ‘f*** off’, made reference to being‘ out of his nut’ and said, ‘I’m going to f****** kill you’. He then made his arms rigid to resist arrest.

“He was taken to hospital due to his level of intoxication.”

Defence solicitor James Sloan told the court his client was apologetic for his alcohol-fuelled actions: “He doesn’t have an extensive record. His daughter has her own property now but stayed with him at the time.

“He has had his difficulties and has an artificial limb. He wishes to apologise to the police officers who were only concerned for his behaviour.

“A short period of supervision might be helpful. He is attending Alcoholics Anonymous.”

Sheriff Frank Pieri told Main: “I will make a community payback order of supervision for a period of 15 months.”
