Passers-by witness drug user’s injection

- Court reporter

A troubled Coatbridge woman who stunned passers-by outside an Airdrie swimming baths by injecting an unknown substance into her groin faces a drug assessment before sentencing.

Margaret Cairns was seen carrying out the disturbing act near the John Smith Pool – in the heart of Airdrie town centre – on May 23 last year.

She was then arrested and taken from outside the Stirling Street facility to Coatbridge police station.

Cairns, 37, admitted to the shocking action at Airdrie Sheriff Court and the Redbridge Court native was back in the dock last week following social work background reports.

Defence solicitor Rowan Myles highlighted his client’s long-term drug issues and requested that Cairns be given further attention and support to help beat her addiction.

Sheriff Petra Collins agreed and adjourned matters until March 22 to allow for an assessment into Cairns’suitability for a drug treatment and testing order.

That is the same date Cairns will face the music for brazenly stealing from a Coatbridge pharmacy twice in the space of four days.

Cairns made off with items from Boots chemist, on the town’s Main Street, on December 29 last year, and then again on January 2.

The shameless thief entered a guilty plea to both charges and faces sentencing following the conclusion of her drug assessment.
