Drunken outburst led to sheriff court

- Court reporter

Resisting arrest and swearing at cops led to a Bargeddie lout being warned by a sheriff to keep his nose clean.

Kyle Knox was “heavily intoxicated” when officers approached him on Coatbridge Main Street on April 18 last year.

The troubled 22-yearold then refused to give officers his personal details and began shouting and swearing at them before being taken to Coatbridge police office.

Knox, from Rosebank Terrace, admitted his guilt at Airdrie Sheriff Court and social work reports into his background were ordered.

When he reappeared for sentencing recently, procurator fiscal Yolande Love told the court: “At 1.56am, police received a call about a male acting aggressively.

“At 2.05am, police attended the scene and saw the accused heavily intoxicated. They tried to establish his identity and he refused.

“The accused said, ‘I’ve not committed any crime’ and ‘get to f***, you dirty b*******’.

“He was then taken to Coatbridge police office and called the officers ‘pr****’and‘ar*******’.”

Knox’s defence solicitor blamed booze for his client’s shameful conduct: “This was a serious incident. He was intoxicated and has a limited recollection [of what happened].

“He is clearly embarrassed and disappointed in his actions.

“He is starting to accumulate a poor record; he is on two community payback orders and is doing well after a shaky start. Supervision seems to assist him.

“He has just recently found employment and is also seeing an alcohol worker.

“He hasn’t been drinking, but there is clearly an underlying problem with alcohol. He seems to have found some stability in recent months.

“My client regrets his behaviour and would be more than willing to do more hours [of unpaid work].”

Sheriff Frank Pieri told Knox: “You have built up a bit of a record, but the report says you have pulled yourself together recently. I will defer sentence for six months for good behaviour and to allow you to engage with your order.”

Knox was told to be back in court on August 16 to establish if he has been of good behaviour during the intervening months.
