Monklands could lose new hospital
Dear Editor
At a recent meeting with NHS Lanarkshire in Sir John Wilson Town Hall a statement was made by a health board representative confirming that the new hospital would be rebuilt in the catchment area for Monklands Hospital. On the face of it this is concerning to say the least, as it would mean the new hospital could possibly be built anywhere rather than in Monklands. Even as far afield as Cumbernauld would, by the health board’s definition, still be within the catchment area.
Monklands Hospital is a major source of employment, not only for all of North Lanarkshire but particularly for Monklands, an area that has suffered major job losses in recent years such as the Imperial works, Pye, Banners and many smaller associated companies.
According to the latest Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation, two of the surrounding areas are rated in the lowest 5 per cent in Scotland and both have the lowest car possession in North Lanarkshire.
It would be easier for people in Monklands to go to a hospital in Glasgow by train than travel to a hospital in Cumbernauld by car or bus.
I cannot express strongly enough how unsuitable any relocation of the hospital would be for the people of Airdrie and Coatbridge, both in the provision of health services and the economic impact on the people of our area. Councillor Peter Sullivan, Independent Alliance
