LET’S BUILD ON CUP RUN

Greig’s plea to Cairn players

-

Gartcairn boss David Greig has called for his players to turn their cup success into league wins starting on Saturday.

The MTC Park outfit secured a big win over fellow Central Division District Two side Lanark United in the West of Scotland Cup, with the 2-1 victory earning them their place in the last 16 of the competition.

Goals from Gary Carmichael and Josh Moore capped off a top display from the side.

The result follows on from their Junior Cup success which has seen them secure a place in the last eight of the competition.

Now, the Cairn gaffer wants his players to emulate the performances they have shown in knockout competitions this Saturday as they host Vale of Leven.

The West Dumbartonshire club have climbed to third in the table, but have played five games more than Gartcairn who sit in seventh.

Greig wants a big performance on Saturday to breathe new life into the promotion fight.

He said: “The way we played against Lanark was excellent - by far the best we have been in my time here.

“We had a lot of good passing moves, and had a couple of great chances to go in front by even more.

“It’s not easy to go from playing in front of big crowds in the Junior Cup to the normal attendance, but we handled that well and the boys were very professional.

“Lanark have been going well in the league and it shows that we are good enough to beat the top sides. “We more than deserved the win. “There is a real feel- good factor around the club right now, and when you are confident you can go on good runs.

“The heads don’t drop as easily if you go behind, and the boys know they can come back into games.

“The cup wins have given everyone a boost - now we need to capitalise on that.”

Greig knows that they have to start putting points on the board, and was keen to dismiss playing less games as a factor in their position.

“We are where we are in the league based on results.

“We can’t get away from the fact that we have lost more games that we have won.

“Yes, we have played less games than Vale of Leven, but there are teams around us who haven’t event hit ten games yet. We can’t use that as an excuse.

“It’s good to go on a cup run, but the league is our bread and butter.

“If you are going to be a successful team you have to be doing well in your league, and we have to rectify that.”
