Clansman take the Harlequin accolade

- Mark Pirie

The Clansman put in a great performance to claim the Harlequin Consolation Trophy.

The tournament gives a chance of silverware to the sides in the bottom eight in the league with the finalists competing against the big boys in the Super Cup at the end of the season.

In the end, it was The Swan who would take on The Clansman in the best of 11 leg final - with eight singles and three pairs matches taking place.

The Swan had beaten The Albert Bar and the Bank Social Club to reach the final with the loss of only three legs.

The Clansman had also lost only three legs beating The Workmen’s A and The Forge in the semi-final.

Jim Parker put The Swan in the lead with a 20-dart win but Rab Hay spoiled what would have been a good leg by missing six darts at a double and Parker took his chance.

Paul McGinley though levelled the match with a very decent 17-darter.

Tony Higgins got the better of a lacklustre Alex McPheat to restore the lead for The Swan with a 20dart win.

Wullie Gilmour won a close encounter with Ricky Bell in 21 darts to take the match level and even at this stage it looked destined to go all the way.

Once again The Swan took the lead this time through Lauchie Black and for the third time The Clansman fought back to level with Ian Randall eventually finding the double that mattered.

William Smith then gave Caldercruixes finest the lead for the first time in the match when he checked out for 64.

Gordon Jackson tied the match at the break with a fine 20-dart win and with three pairs games to go it was all to play for.

Smith and Randall put The Clansman in front which meant that The Swan would have to win the last two legs to take the title.

They managed 50 per cent of the task when Black and Higgins who had a fine tournament over all made it five legs a piece.

McGinley and Gilmour of The Clansman put in a great display to take the title. Ton, Ton Forty, Ton and another ton with McGinley checking out 61 to take the title back to Caldercruix for the first time since 2012.

Other notable performers on the night were Davie Kerr who had a 106 checkout and Alec Mills who notched a 180.
