Brophy is the Commonwealth King
Caldercruix boxer David Brophy came up trumps Down Under to claim the Commonwealth super middleweight title last week.
Brophy, 26, was a heavy underdog against the undefeated Zac Dunn but stunned the cocky Australian in front of his own fans in Melbourne to win inside seven rounds.
“It does make it a bit sweeter for me,”said Brophy.“The promoter over there was brilliant with me, but you could tell he (Dunn) had an air of over-confidence about him.
“That ended up being more ignorance that anything. I‘m sure he thought I was just there to be beaten.
“I knew that wasn’t the case. It might be a shock to a few people, but it’s not undeserved. I don’t think anyone in the game works harder than me.”
Now Brophy is set to appear alongside Ricky Burns at the Fighting Scots Gym event in Airdrie Town Hall as a guest speaker on April 22, and, while he doesn’t know his next opponent yet he says he will take on anyone.
“I’m sure Dunn will want a rematch for the title and, if he does, I want to fight him in Scotland,”he said.“I’m not someone who turns down a big fight or an opportunity.
“I’ll sit down with my management and we will see who we think would be a good fit.”
For now, Brophy is recovering from his Australian adventure, adding:“The trip back was bad — so I’m just going to get over the jet-lag and then get back in the gym!”
