Airdrie & Coatbridge Advertiser
Dedicated to BB
A Coatbridge man has been recognised for his outstanding contribution to youth work.
Gartsherrie resident Jim McCormick, a Boys’ Brigade expedition and outdoor leader, was honoured with a lifetime achievement award at the national youth work of the year awards.
Jim, 69, joined the Brigade’s Life Boys at Old Monkland Church more than six decades ago, aged just eight.
He later joined the 7th Coatbridge BB company, where he became a warrant officer for the Junior section, before working up to the rank of lieutenant in the Company section.
Over the years Jim has held various positions in Airdrie, Coatbridge and District Battalion, including taking charge of expedition and cross-country events.
His interest in outdoor work and leading groups on expeditions on the Scottish hills became a particular favourite.
Jim has served on the national outdoor and expedition team for more than two decades and from 2009 to 2015 was expedition coordinator.
He has also helped at many other BB companies, including 6th and 7th Airdrie and 10th Coatbridge, and is now a volunteer member of 3rd Kilsyth.
And Jim has extended his passion for caring for young people by working as a civilian for Strathclyde Police.
He said: “I was totally gobsmacked and very honoured to receive this award.
“I hope that my involvement has helped young people to go further, seek new opportunities and take the initiative.”
Alan Hunter, acting director of The Boys’ Brigade in Scotland, said: “Jim has helped many young people challenge themselves, grow in confidence and develop new skills.
“We are extremely lucky to have so many passionate and dedicated volunteers like Jim in the BB.
“This award is an excellent personal achievement for him but it is also recognition of the work carried out by so many across the organisation.”
