Big band celebrates special anniversary

- Alona Hotel

An award-winning Hamilton big band is celebrating a special anniversary – after five years of hosting a sellout charity dance.

The Michael Brawley Big Band return to The Alona Hotel, Strathclyde Park, on Friday, April 21, for the glittering gala event. And the 22-strong group is calling on Lanarkshire readers to dig deep to support good causes. Spokesman Gary Mitchell said: “Tickets are selling out fast and we’d urge people to get in touch to secure their seat.

“It’s a great feeling to be able to enjoy live music and help those in need at the same time.”

The band was formed by musician Michael Brawley in 1995 to allow Lanarkshire school leavers to continue to play their chosen instrument.

It is now run by a committee of band members with players aged 1840 performing solely to raise money for charity.

In the 22 years since it was set up, the band has raised more than £50,000 for worthy causes.

Gary added: “In the last year alone we have donated £500 each to Crohn’s & Colitis UK, Macmillan Cancer Support and Cancer Research UK.

“The donations were raised from the proceeds of last year’s dance at the Alona and other charity work.

“This year’s event is shaping up to be extra special as we have a male and a female vocalist on board.

“The band will be on stage for two and a half hours performing big band standards, soul, funk and pop.

“There’s sure to be something for everyone.”

The musicians are stalwarts of the National Concert Band Festival and have been awarded Platinum certificates many times in recognition of the high standard of their musical performance and individual talent.

Tickets, priced £8, are selling out fast. Doors open at 7.30pm. They can be purchased via the band’s Facebook page, or by emailing brawleybigband@yahoo.co.uk
