Airdrie victory

Academy in the final

- Andrew Bargh

The semi-finals in the United Schools Cup served up a thrilling 15 goals and a penalty shoot-out.

Airdrie Academy now face St Ambrose High in the final at the Excelsior Stadium this evening after progressing past their respective opponents last Thursday.`

Airdrie Academy strolled past holders Caldervale High with a magnificent 8-3 victory.

Liam McMeekin and Ben Ross put Airdrie 2-0 up before the deficit was halved by James Hughes.

McMeekin scored two more to complete his treble before Aiden Gibb made it 5-1.

Ben Ross found the net to make it six, before Caldervale threatened to make it nervy for their counterparts.

Adam Todd and Taylor Hay both scored to make it 6-3 but Airdrie’s Ross went one better than his team mate McMeekin and bagged two more to complete the rout and book his school’s place in the final.

It was a much tighter game between St Ambrose and St Andrews.

The former took the lead when Craig McGurn found the net, but a double from Liam Airns turned the tie on it’s head to put St Andrews in the driving seat.

McGurn had other ideas and levelled the playing field when he notched his second, sending the game to a penalty shoot-out.

St Ambrose triumphed 4-2 to set up what is sure to be an exciting match against Airdrie Academy tonight, which kicks-off at 7pm at the Excelsior, whom the Supporters’ Trust would like to thank for their support.
