Man is jailed after issuing broken glass threat to cops

-

A Coatbridge man who brazenly brandished a piece of broken glass at police – after trying to slash his own neck with it – has been jailed for four months.

Mark Fallon, 34, was spotted outside Blairgrove Court by officers who were on patrol at around 9.20pm on March 3.

They noticed he was cutting his own neck and approached him with concern, at which point he brandished a piece of glass at them and yelled “pervert b*******” and “f****** p*****” in their direction.

The officers ordered Fallon to drop the makeshift weapon and he did so as soon as they drew their batons.

He was subsequently arrested and taken to Monklands Hospital where he was treated for superficial wounds, before being taken to Coatbridge police office.

Fallon pleaded guilty to the offence and in mitigation his solicitor said: “This is a fairly sad state of affairs.

“In the last 15 years he has only been at liberty for three of them.

“He has significant mental health issues and takes medication to keep him on an even keel.

“When he drinks it upsets his behaviour and this was the reason for his self harming.

“He had only been at liberty for six weeks at the time of the offence and I think a community payback order of supervision would be suitable and beneficial for my client.”

However, Sheriff Derek O’Carroll disagreed and addressing Fallon directly, told him: “Due to the nature and your record there is no alternative to a custodial sentence here.

“You should take advantage of any assistance given to you and I’ve considered your failure to comply in the past.

“For that reason, you will spend four months in prison which I have discounted from six.”
