Spelling error one big laugh

ResidentsRe customise council’s new street sign

If comedic Kirkwood residents were to appear on vintage gameshow Blockbusters, they’d be forced to ask host Mr Holness: “Can I have a ‘P’ please, Bob?”

For new signs at both ends of Springhill Avenue are missing that very letter, much to the hilarity of those living there.

Light-hearted locals have taken to social media and joked “where’s Bob Holness when you need him?” after the spelling mistake was made on their new street signs.

This week, to rectify the error, one family have decided to take matters into their own hands and placed their own letter ‘P’ on the sign.

Hugh Grant, 50, has lived on the street all his life and laughed: “If I’m honest I didn’t even notice it at first, it was my brother Henry who pointed it out to me.

“I watched the worker for a good five minutes when he was putting the sign up and clearly none of us noticed.

“He was going up and down the ladder, straightening the sign and looking at it again.

“It’s one of those things that is right in front of your nose and you just don’t see it.

“Nobody is annoyed about it, it’s just a silly mistake so we decided to have our own fun with it.”

The dad-of-one went on: “Henry came up with the idea of correcting the error ourselves. He knocked on my window and said ‘we’re going to the shop’.

“We went into town and came back with our own sparkly letter ‘P’ and stuck it up.

“Everyone has been having a laugh with it, it’s been the talk of the town on Facebook. Most people of a certain age remember Blockbusters. I know I do, I ran home from school to watch it!

“And because of the letter that’s missing, it made me think of Bob Holness straight away – because contestants hated having to ask him for a ‘P’. “Now, we’re desperate for one!” A spokesperson for North Lanarkshire council said: “Thanks to the eagle-eyed residents for pointing out the spelling mistake.

“We’ll arrange for a replacement sign to be made and fixed on to the street.”
