Driving force was with them at this classic cars event

-

Petrolheads of all ages got their fill on Sunday during a classic cars event at Summerlee museum in Coatbridge.

More than 150 vintage vehicles were on show at the family fun day, so much so that some cars couldn’t fit in and had to park up outside.

The event, in it’s ninth year, was held in aid of Glasgow-based children’s charity, CHAS.

Organiser Joe Kelly, from Glenboig, said the amount from this year’s event has yet to be confirmed as the final donations trickle through – but he’s confident the day was a roaring success.

Joe told the Advertiser:“It was a brilliant event.

“The weather was great, it was very busy and we had loads of different things on as well as the cars.

“We had pipe bands, stormtroopers, clowns, a tombola, raffles; there was a great turnout and it really was quite the day.”

He continued:“Over the years, we’ve raised £35,000 for charity through classic car days.

“It costs £3 to enter a car then there are all the fundraising events to go with it.

“This year we’re expecting between £4000 and £6000 to be raised and we’ll find out over the coming days.

“CHAS are always over the moon with our contribution and it’s a marvellous charity as they help children who are less fortunate.”

Joe, who owns four retro cars himself including a Jaguar series three e-type, said it doesn’t get much better for car enthusiasts.

He added:“This is as good as it gets for people like me.

“This is our hobby and there’s a massive display of good cars to come and see.

“There’s a lot of high value vehicles as well; a lot of them are from around the 50s.

“It’s a chance for people to come and see cars they wouldn’t see sitting in a car park.

“It’s great for us and it’s great for the charity.”
