Rallying call for Gartcairn troops

Boss Davie wants three wins and no less in run-in

- Sports reporter

Gartcairn boss Davie Greig has called for his players to fight for promotion until the last kick of the ball this season.

Cairn go into their game against Ashfield on Saturday knowing that only a win will do if they are to complete a late push for the top three in the Central District Second Division.

With three games left – including a clash with third-placed Lanark – Greig knows that any dropped points will cost them their promotion hopes.

The aim for Greig is now a simple one – win every game.

“The players are well aware of what is required now,” he told the Advertiser.

“If there are any dropped points, our season is effectively over.

“If we were to even draw with Ashfield there is pretty much no way we can make it into the top three.

“Every game is crucial for us at this point in the season.

“With the form we have been in recently I don’t see why we can’t do it.

“Everyone at the club is positive – and the players should take a lot of credit for how they have played in the past few weeks.

“There has been a great contribution from the people in the background as well as the academy recently.”

A 2- 1 win over East Kilbride Thistle on Monday rounded off a busy week for the MTC Park outfit with three games in just six days.

This included a historic cup tie against Kilysth Rangers with a hard-fought 2-0 defeat to the Super First Division side in the West of Scotland Cup.

Greig feels they were unlucky at times but feels the better team won on the day.

He said: “We had a penalty claim early on that was turned down.

“If you get that then it changes things a little.

“We held our own for the first 25 minutes but they are a quality team from a higher division.

“I don’t have any complaints about the final result.”

However, Greig feels the narrow 1-0 win on Saturday over Newmains followed by the positive result against the Jags are the most important thing for the club.

“These are two tough places to go and play our style of football,” continued the gaffer. “The pitches aren’t the best so we had to fight for the points.

“Even the goal for East Kilbride came from an awkward bobble on the pitch.

“To come back with six points was the main thing for us.”
