Mistakes are Airdrie downfall
Airdrieonians......0 Alloa.......1 Mark Pirie Frustrated Airdrieonians head coach Mark Wilson called for his side to cut out the“comical”goals that are costing them.
A mistake from Diamonds keeper Rohan Ferguson gave the ball straight to Alloa’s Jordan Kilpatrick to score the only goal of the game.
Wilson was angered as he felt preventable goals have hurt his side all season.
Following the game, he told the Advertiser:“In the first half we were the better team.
“We dominated and made the better chances. We hit the crossbar when we should have scored, but it was a stuffy game.
“The second half was more even but we lost another comical goal – that has been the story of our season so far.
“We aren’t losing goals by making the opposition break us down, or to any great moves, it’s just individual errors.
“That’s the disappointing thing – but in the end we can’t really complain.
“It’s the same story over and over again.”
Despite the defeat, Wilson singled out Scott Stewart for special praise after playing through illness. The coach said: “He gave us a good 70 minutes even though he had a bug.
“I know some of the support wasn’t happy when he came off because he had been one of our best players but he gave us all he had and we felt that was the best thing for him.”
Airdrie went close to breaking the deadlock on seven minutes when the defenders joined the attack and a corner from the right saw Simon Mensing’s head flick knocked on by Joe Gorman only to be denied by the crossbar.
Alloa took the lead on 66 minutes after Ferguson came out for a ball beyond his defenders and cleared it upfield.
However, the ball fell to Kirkpatrick who controlled well and sent the ball back into the net.
As Airdrie pushed for an equaliser in 74 minutes, a Gorman header was pushed away for a corner by Neil Parry.
The former Diamonds keeper pulled off a great save from substitute Adam Brown in 83 minutes after fine build-up play.
Alloa nearly doubled their lead as Kilpatrick – who has grabbed 14 goals from midfield – broke through but his shot was well saved by Ferguson as the young keeper looked to atone for his earlier blunder.
The result leaves the New Broomfielde side tied on 46 points with four teams but outside the play-off spots.
