Mixed views on the planned introduction of parking enforcement in town centre

-

Airdrie town centre traders’ concerns about the potential impact of planned parking enforcement measures struck a chord with our Facebook readers.

Business owners on Stirling Street claim customers could be driven away from their premises to out-of-town retail parks after existing single yellow lines on the street were repainted, understood to be ahead of the proposed introduction of parking wardens.

Caroline Logan backed the new measures: “About time they enforce those lines. Trying to drive down there or coming out of the car park at Wetherspoons is a joke!”

Clare Colligan agreed: “It’s about time! The roads are a complete joke.

“There’s a massive car park in the centre and other large car parks all over Airdrie. The people that park right on the main roads are just too lazy to go to a car park.”

Catherine Nixon added: “There are something like 15 free car parks in Airdrie and yet half the town thinks it is acceptable to block the roads by parking on them.

“It’s particularly galling on Hallcraig Street where lazy individuals can’t even find it in their being to park 20m further up the hill in a purpose-built multi-storey car park.”

But Angela McLean raised concerns about the effectiveness of the lines: “It’s a joke; the day after they were re-painted cars were parked there again. Ain’t gonna work unless somebody is enforcing it.”

Maggie Lawson said: “They are a joke. Monklands Pharmacy double yellows are never enforced.”

Denise Jack highlighted another issue: “The Aldi car park is full every day from the train station passengers. Maybe if the council looked into sorting that issue out then we would have plenty of parking.

“It’s affecting Aldi’s trade and all the small businesses nearby. Hard enough to get people to shop in Airdrie.”

Marc Jones posted: “People just need to park in car parks and learn to walk a little.”
