Pain relief for patients aims to ease anxiety

Innovative injection

- Jean Ward

Two Coatbridge dentists have injected a painless new treatment into their practice to aid anxious patients.

Keith and Gillian Preston, from Coatbridge Family Dental Care, have introduced an innovative motorised anaesthetic injection system to their Academy Street practice to benefit patients of all ages.

And the couple, who have operated the practice in the town for over eight years, are delighted with the results.

The computer-assisted Calaject system provides a slow, steady and gentle flow of anaesthesia, which takes the pain out of traditional dental injections.

Keith, a 38-year-old clinician, said: “A fear of injections is one of the main deterrents to visiting the dentist.

“Mastering the ability to provide comfortable injections to patients is something all dentists should strive for and something I am particularly interested in for the benefit of my patients.”

And this year, despite his initial scepticism, Keith decided to trial one of the many systems on the market.

He explained: “I decided to take a closer look at the Calaject computer assisted local anaesthesia system.

“Despite reviews being very positive, on initial investigation, it seemed to be a significant investment in something I had never tested out on my patients.

“Fortunately, my wife Gillian convinced me it was an innovative idea and there was nothing to lose from giving it a go.”

He added: “I can now confidently tell my patients that the injection isn’t going to be like their previous injections and I know it’s all going to be fine.

“And when I’m relaxed, it makes the patient relaxed, and I can do a much better job of treating them with comfortable injections.”
