Scout group sets up extra Beaver colony

Demand to join up

- Judith Tonner

A Coatbridge Scout group has established an additional new Beaver colony to meet demand from local youngsters.

Its 18 new members, aged between six and eight, have already taken part in a wide range of activities such as learning about animals and camp craft, welcoming visitors from the police and fire services, and making and painting their own sculptures.

They have also been working on various badges and awards since the new unit held its first meeting shortly before the Easter holiday – and recently celebrated making their Scouting promise to be officially invested into the organisation.

Volunteers at the 2nd Coatbridge units, based in Whifflet, worked to set up a second Beaver colony at the group – which already had one existing Beaver group plus Cubs, Scouts and Explorers – to meet “great demand” to join.

Group Scout Leader Gary Patterson told the Advertiser: “For a number of years our youngest section has held a long waiting list.

“I managed to secure two amazing volunteers, Kayleigh and Lauren, who decided to take on the role of leaders; and once they’d completed their initial training, we planned a programme and started to enrol the boys and girls.

“Plenty of planning and organising later, the second Beaver section is a huge success. It’s great to fulfil the demand and I’m delighted and proud of all the 14 volunteer leaders who give up their time each week to help this group go from strength to strength.

“It’s been running since 1907 and operates all Scouting sections for over 100 boys and girls aged six to 18, with all sections now at capacity.”
