Generous residents from Airdrie and Coatbridge raised an impressive £3000 for a local charity at this year’s Monklands half marathon.

Mo r e than 600 competitors donned their running shoes and wore their brightest colours to raise funds for the Lanarkshire Beatson and Beatson Cancer Charity, the official charity partner of this year’s race.

The well-attended event which was organised by ClubsportNL included a children’s fun run with a 100m toddler dash, a 400m dash and a 1k fun run.

Funds raised will go towards benefiting the people of Lanarkshire and the recently- opened Lanarkshire Beatson, a state- of- the- art £ 22 million radiotherapy treatment centre based at Monklands Hospital. Morag Cunningham, head of fundraising at Beatson Cancer Charity, said: “We’re honoured to be chosen as the nominated charity for this year’s Monklands half marathon and would like to thank everyone who took part to raise money for Lanarkshire Beatson.

“More than one in three people are affected by cancer in the West of Scotland – the highest cancer rate in Europe.

“Working with ClubsportNL is a terrific way to raise vital funds while encouraging locals to get active, have fun and raise funds at the same time.

“We’re overwhelmed by the response, this is an incredible sum of money raised and there’s still more donations coming in.

“Every donation is greatly appreciated and will give a massive boost for the new radiotherapy treatment centre in Lanarkshire.

“I hope everyone who raced for Beatson Cancer Charity had a fantastic day – you’ve really helped to make a difference.”
