Career-minded kids learn about world of work
Youngsters at a Coatbridge primary have taken part in their school’s inaugural world of work day.
The P4 to P7 pupils at Shawhead Primary were introduced to a variety of representatives from the working world at the busy careers event.
And the inquisitive kids were delighted to have the chance to find out more about the running of St Andrew’s Hospice from Andrew Flynn, the hospice’s schools’ coordinator.
Police officers James Maxwell and Anneka Smullen, from the Coatbridge problem-solving team, delivered a well-received presentation on community safety and the dangers of child exploitation.
And PC Smullen told the Advertiser:“The children were all well-informed and switched on.
“They were intrigued to learn about the different departments in the police and how it all comes together.
“A big part of our job is to engage with the community and try to change the perception of the police.”
Shawhead’s budding young journalists turned the tables on Advertiser reporter Jean Ward and quizzed her on the workings of a newsroom, and were fascinated to learn more about life at the paper.
She said:“The pupils were full of questions and particularly intrigued with my shorthand notes.”
Ambulance Service emergency medical dispatcher and freelance photographer Chris McIntyre kept the kids in the picture and allowed them to take some snaps.
He said:“They were fascinated by my cameras and how heavy they were.”
Head teacher Helen Paterson was delighted with the response to the first world of work event.
She added:“It’s important to show the kids positive role models because many of them have no concept of the world outside of Coatbridge.
“I would like to thank everyone who came along today, it’s been a fantastic day and the children have gained so much from the experience.”
