Scottish icons form sculpture

Councillors visit Plains for opening

- Ian Bunting

Plains Primary welcomed guests along to the unveiling of the school’s Scottish Sculpture.

The impressive wooden sculpture – now taking pride of place in the village’s community allotment – is the culmination of pupils’ outdoor learning and the project involved every class in the school.

P4-6 children started the initiative back in October, when they focused on starting a model that could be displayed in the school.

Each class voted on two Scottish landmarks to include in the sculpture.

Pupils from P1-2 picked the Loch Ness Monster and a Scottish thistle; while kids from P2-4 suggested the Armadillo on Glasgow’s Clydeside and the Wallace Monument in Stirling; P4-6 went for Ben Nevis and Edinburgh Castle; and the class of P6-7 were responsible for The Kelpies just outside Falkirk and Glenfinnan Viaduct parts.

Each class added to a cardboard model in school and while the pupils were involved in making and constructing the model, they used skills learned from different curricular areas.

Airdrie North councillors Tommy Morgan and Alan Beveridge were also among the guests, parents, and allotment members who supported the pupils at the sculpture’s official opening.

Principal teacher Gail Wilson told the Advertiser: “In February, work began outside to construct the wooden model of the landmarks and this was officially opened in front of our guests.

“It shows the excellent Scottish Sculpture on a wall at the community allotment.

“Pupils from each class showcased their learning and were able to explain how the project had developed and what they had learned.

“They also shared their research into the Scottish landmarks and the skills that they had developed throughout.

“Outdoor learning is viewed as extremely important within the school and is really well supported.

“The school cannot thank Gordon White and Anne Mallon enough for their weekly contributions to outdoor learning, and all the additional helpers who supported the project by giving their time to volunteer.”
