Readers hit out at methods used by Labour party to retain council control

-

Our readers were in the mood to air their views on Labour retaining control of North Lanarkshire Council, despite the SNP being the council’s largest party.

Labour controversially held on to power at the local authority by securing support to form a minority administration, with leader Jim Logue and deputy Paul Kelly re-elected to their positions.

Iain Sinnett didn’t hold back in his criticism of the news: “[Labour are] Traitors to the Scottish people. In bed with the very same Tories that stripped Scotland of industry and is stripping Scotland of its natural resources.”

Jennifer Nunn simply said: “And this is democracy!?”

Janice Mills pondered what Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale would make of the outcome: “What is Kezia going to do? Either she is in charge or she is not.”

Buchanan Smith had a more measured response: “Effectively a pact rather than a formal coalition– the thing is, what is the price for continued Tory support?”

Martin McWilliams asked: “Is this a case of the Unionist parties working against the Nationalists?”

Meanwhile, Advertiser readers also responded to our feature on the For Humanity We Speak event held in Airdrie’s Sir John Wilson town hall.

The emotional evening saw five Syrian refugees relocated to homes in Monklands take to the stage to share powerful stories about their time in the war-torn country.

Kirsten Jorgensen was in the audience at the event: “I cried all night listening to the stories of these brave people, who only want the chance of a safe life with their children.”

Frances Campbell added: “Very emotional oration, wonderfully presented.”

Mary Morrow Ferrie posted: “No one should ever have to live with what they have been through. My heart goes out to each and every one of them.”

Elizabeth Ann McManus said: “Makes you realise how lucky you are.”
