Readers slam sports centre vandals, and pay respects to brave war hero Hugh

Advertiser Facebook readers contacted us in their droves to hit out at the thoughtles­s yobs who targeted Coatbridge outdoor sports centre in a spree of vandalism.

Walls were sprayed with graffiti and items, including an old exercise bike and glass bottles, were smashed up around the building, which is a regular target for vandals.

Martin McWilliams posted: “This is a shocking report. It is about time something was done.”

Sharon Doherty suggested: “Get cameras and catch the culprits that do this.”

Alan Stewart added: “Why don’t the council put security on site with a big dog? – problem solved.”

Curtis Shorter said: “Just don’t understand why anyone would do something like this, especially to a valued community facility.”

Ann Marie McCaffery simply said: “Disgusting!”

Our readers were saddened to hear of the passing of World War II hero Hugh Ewart, who died aged 92.

Brave Hugh, from Coatbridge, was awarded the Legion d’Honneur medal for his part in the D-Day landings and was only 18 when he volunteere­d to fight the Nazis, serving as a sniper with the elite Royal Marines Commandos.

Gerry McGiff had the pleasure of spending time with Hugh: “Got to know Hugh well playing the Coatbridge pool. He was a lovely man and respected by all in the pool league. RIP Hugh.”

Scott Mills added: “RIP buddy, it was an honour and a privilege to have known you for a good few years, and play pool alongside you at such a great age.”

Janet Sinclair commented: “God bless you Hugh. Thank you for your service and bravery.”

Berni Wilkins said: “RIP Hugh. Thank you for your service. Respect.”

Ronnie Adams paid his respects: “Rest easy soldier.”
