Violent outburst nets her bother

- Court reporter

An Airdrie woman has been ordered to carry out unpaid work following a violent outburst in the town centre.

Ann Nelson, 45, of Kippen Street, pled guilty to attacking a woman and two police officers on November 21 last year.

She also behaved in a threatening and abusive manner at Monklands Hospital, telling an officer she would,“slit your throat”and“throw a brick through your teeth”.

The procurator fiscal told Airdrie Sheriff Court: “The accused approached the victim in Superdrug and grabbed her hair.

“When police arrived they took the accused to the back of the store for a conversation.

“She became aggressive and shouted‘f*** off you b*******’.

“She then kicked both officers on the legs and was arrested, however she continued in her aggression as cuffs were being applied.”

The fiscal continued:“She attempted to kick them once more before trying to headbutt one of the officers.

“She was taken to Coatbridge police office and also Monklands Hospital.

“At the hospital, the accused made a motion across her own neck and said‘I’m going to remember you, find you and slit your throat’.

“She also promised,‘I’m going to throw a brick through your teeth’.”

Defence solicitor Tony Linden said:“I barely recognise this woman as the one who committed these offences.

“She is now stable from drugs and alcohol and motivated to remain as such.

“She is engaging with a separate, current community payback order and doing well, having completed 37 out of 80 hours so far.

“It was disgraceful behaviour and the cause of it was the consumption of alcohol and valium.

“She is full of genuine remorse and is focused on retaining her progress with family relationships, two daughters and a grand-daughter.”

Mr Linden added:“I would ask that you consider a community-based disposal with reviews to see if she can follow through with her unpaid work and maintain her family relationships.”

Sheriff Derek O’Carroll agreed and said:“There is an alternative to custody here.

“I am imposing 225 hours of unpaid work in the community which will be completed in 10 months.

“You will also remain under supervision for two years.

“Your current performance hasn’t been what it could have, so be under no illusions; if you do not perform I will send you to jail.”

A review of the case was arranged for four months’time.
