Slim success is health booster

Amanda loses four stones in a year

- Ian Bunting

A diabetic single mum has lost four stones in less than a year to transform her self esteem – and dramatically improve her health.

Amanda Cosgrove, from Coatbridge, was inspired to start shedding the pounds after doctors warned she would have to start injecting herself with insulin if her weight continued to spiral out of control.

The 37- year- old – who at one point weighed over 19 stones – joined up with her local Slimming World group – and has never looked back.

Amanda told the Advertiser: “I have been a single mum for 14 years and always just picked at food and ate rubbish.

“Back in 2010, I ended up being diagnosed with type two diabetes, but my diet was still out of control and I was put on medication.

“I remember going to the diabetic nurse one time and I weighed in at over 19 stones and in May last year I was told that if I didn’t start to control things better I would need to start injecting myself with insulin, which is something I’ve never wanted to do.

“I had got to the stage where I was totally disgusted and uncomfortable in my own skin and decided it was time to start loving myself; my lifestyle had to change.

“I heard a lot of people talking about how good Slimming World is so I contacted my local group – and it has been the best decision I have made in a long time.

“I may have lost weight, but I’ve also gained some of the best friends ever and having them on my journey, and me being part of theirs, has made the change so much easier.”

Amanda is fast approaching her Slimming World four stones award and the results of her weight loss have been seen beyond her slimming group and all the way to the doctor’s surgery.

She explained: “I have come on leaps and bounds with my diabetes.

“In May last year my HbA1c was sitting at 82 and it’s now sitting at 45. I still take Metformin as a safety net, but I have been taken off all of my other medication.

“I would highly recommend Slimming World to anyone looking to make changes in their lifestyle; it is definitely the way forward.”

Amanda’s Slimming World consultant, Denise McCormick, added: “The difference in Amanda over the last year is quite remarkable, with her smile and new found confidence shining through.

“She is a valued member of my social team and always willing to help others.

“I’m so glad she walked through my door as seeing positive changes in people’s health – and life – makes my job worthwhile.”
