Driving forward with Glenboig road project
Route construction
Work is now underway on the new Glenboig link road, which will connect the village to Gartcosh and the M73.
The £2.6 million development – the first project to be carried out by North Lanarkshire Council under the Glasgow City Region city deal – will see a major road being constructed, plus a roundabout and drainage basin.
Also included are an extension to Gartcosh nature reserve, new cycle paths, footways and lighting.
Glenboig ward councillors (from left) Michael McPake and Willie Doolan visited the area with Jim Wilkinson of contractors interseive and North Lanarkshire enterprise convener Allan Graham to mark the start of 34 weeks of construction.
The link road is an integral part of the identified Gartcosh/ Glenboig community growth area, which will see up to 3000 new homes being built in the area over the next two decades.
Councillor Graham said: “The link road will open up a new longterm future for the communities of Gartcosh and Glenboig.
“While there is huge demand for new homes in the area and interest from developers, without co- ordinated infrastructure in place, plans have stalled.
“The link road is key to improve transport links between Glenboig and the motorways, Gartcosh railway station and the business park – as well as increasing employment opportunities and commercial investment.”
Work has recently been completed to upgrade existing roads in nearby Gartcosh business park to allow connection of the new link road to the M73.
The City Deal is a £1.13 billion infrastructure fund for eight neighbouring councils, with planned projects also including an east Airdrie link road as part of a pan-Lanarkshire transport corridor.
