Coatbridge brewery raises glass to festival

Supermarket link-up

- Judith Tonner

A special beer from a Coatbridge-based brewery is on sale in stores across Scotland after it was chosen to feature in a supermarket promotion.

Our Scottish Heroes Golden Ale, produced by Veterans Brewing, is among a selection of hand-picked craft beers on sale at Aldi’s 73 stores across the country as part of the retailer’s Scottish beer festival.

The brewery was set up by long- standing forces friends Alex McDivitt and Tommy Watt, whose aim is to create jobs for fellow veterans, help them adjust to life after service and work with charities linked to the military.

Now thousands of bottles of their creation, Our Scottish Heroes – named after the charity which it supports – are on sale all over Scotland in the supermarket event.

It is expected to generate sales worth a combined total of more than £130,000 for the 35 breweries involved.

Tommy told the Advertiser last November: “We spent a long time planning, brewing, tasting and refining our beer before coming up with what we believe is an exceptional recipe.

“It really does taste delicious; like a malty caramel biscuit with a spicy citrus hop and a lingering crisp apple aftertaste.”

Veterans Brewing has its head office at Atrium business centre in the town, with its founders currently raising funds to set up their own bottling and brewery plant.

Alex and Tommy served together in the forces for 22 years, with Tommy later establishing Ale of Mull brewing on his native island before teaming up with his friend for their current venture.

Tom Bradley, who is Aldi’s buying director for Scotland, said: “Our Scottish beer festival gives up- and- coming breweries the chance to convert more people to the exceptional craft beer produced here in Scotland.”
