The Novacs are out to storm the world stage

- Andrew Bargh

An Airdrie band have set their sights on global domination after performing a support slot at the O2 ABC in Glasgow.

Hotly-tipped our piece indie rock band The Novacs are aiming high high despite forming only last year at their school, Caldervale High. The group of mates, Reiss Harrison, Sam Cane, Ewan McDonald and Andrew Haxton, who are now leaving school, will play at the iconic King Tuts Wah-Wah Hut in September but are hoping their first steps into the foray of live music will become giant strides over the next few years. Lead guitarist Sam, who turns 18 this week said: “We have a lot coming up as a band and it’s exciting.

“Our next gig in Glasgow is on July 2 at Stereo and we are playing at the Hug and Pint in the same month.

“We aim really high though and that’s what keeps us going.

“In five years we hope to be playing at big festivals like Glastonbury and want to have made a proper name for ourselves by then.

“Things are moving forward and we want to do this full-time and have a career in music.

The band’s Facebook page says they were formed in Sam’s spider-infested shed as they tried to “pull together some covers.”

But the only web the band have become entangled in is that of the world-wide one, racking up nearly 1000 followers on Facebook already.

And Sam says their fellow pupils at Caldervale have been a huge help.

He added: “We’ve had a lot of encouragement from people at our school.

“They all just began following us after we started playing some shows.

“Even people who aren’t necessarily in our friend group are really encouraging and kind about the band which means a lot to all of us as that suggests they genuinely like our music.

“It was one of our teachers, Affy Ahmed, who helped us record our first two singles!

“One of our logos on our Facebook page was sent to us by a guy at school we didn’t even know that well; he just did it out of pure kindness. “Things like that matter a lot. “We get around 40 of the same people coming to our gigs and we hope that can grow over our next few shows before King Tuts in the Autumn.

“We’d also like to play a headline show in Airdrie soon too but that’s yet to be finalised.”
