Tories vote with Labour for ‘logical’ move

-

The leader of North Lanarkshire’s Conservative group says the decision to move to a three-weekly cycle for bin collections was a logical one.

Meghan Gallacher and her Tory colleagues on the policy and resources committee, Bob Burgess and Sandy Watson, voted with Labour to change refuse collections across North Lanarkshire.

Councillor Gallacher said: “We took a good look at it and felt it was something we should adopt.

“The Scottish Government’s Zero Waste plan has to be implemented and we felt it was the right thing to do.

“There is a lot of pressure being put on to meet these targets and we have to take a logical approach to that.

“We have to find innovative new ways of recycling.

“It doesn’t look good on paper but when you look at it logically it will make us more environmentally friendly.”

The new scheme will see a reduction in the number of bins collected and a change in what goes in them.

From the autumn food and garden waste will be collected in a single bin, uplifted fortnightly, with other bins for paper and card; glass, metal and plastic and then residual waste being collected every three weeks.
