Reckless driver’s jail term and decade ban

-

A banned driver, who drove dangerously and at high speed through Moodiesburn, has been jailed for 25 months and disqualified from driving for 10 years.

Reckless Ryan Haldane, 32, raced through his home village on February 12.

And at Airdrie Sheriff Court last week he admitted to dangerous driving on Auchingeil Road and Gartferry Road.

He pled guilty to driving at speeds up to 50 miles per hour in a 30 mph zone.

Prosecutor Agnes Meek told the court how Haldane crossed the carriageway and overtook cars when unsafe to do so and at excessive speed.

“At the junction of Gartferry Road and Mudfoot Road he collided with a fence,” added Mrs Meek.

The court also heard that Haldane was serving a driving ban at the time of the offence.

Lawyer Ian Moir said: “He accepts custody is inevitable.

“He has pled guilty as quickly as possible and I would ask the court give him credit for that. There was never any intention of him going to trial. He has three children and a long term partner.

“He accepts he was taking a huge risk driving while disqualified and has to pay for it.”

Sheriff Derek O’Carroll told Haldane: “These offences are serious.

“This was very dangerous driving. You have quite a large number of previous convictions from 2001, so there is no alternative for me but to impose a custodial sentence.

“I will reduce the sentence to 25 months from three years which I would have imposed had you not pled guilty at the earliest opportunity.

“This will be backdated to April 25, when you were first taken into custody.”

In addition Sheri f f O’Car roll imposed a 12-month supervised release order, which he described as “an additional protection to the public”.

“Should you commit any further offence during that 12 month period, you will be returned to prison,” added the sheriff.

Haldane was also banned from driving for 10 years.
