Brothers will fight homes plans refusal

-

The land owners behind a controversial move to locate houses on a site consisting of industrial premises and an area of green belt have expressed their disappointment after they were refused planning consent.

Brothers John and Peter Hannaway claim “this is not the end of the road” for their plans to use the whole plot of their skip hire and waste recycling plant on Sykeside Road near Carnbroe for residential development, with an appeal set to be lodged.

J& P Hannaway’s application was rejected at a council planning meeting last Thursday, before which planning officials recommended in a report to councillors the application be refused.

The firm had 2300-plus petition signatures in support of its proposals, however there were 162 objections, including from Monkland Glen community council; while North Lanarkshire Council also received 139 letters in support for the project.

Responding to the decision to refuse planning consent for the project, J& P Hannaway moved to reassure “the 2300-plus concerned parents and residents who signed a petition supporting the application that this is not the end of the road, and that an appeal will be lodged as soon as the formal refusal notice is received”.

Peter Hannaway said: “We note that refusal was on the grounds of greenbelt policy but part of our submission was an expert report which found that there are no ecological reasons to justify this approach.”

The Hannaway family had earlier revealed they “reluctantly decided that the time has come to relocate operations” because of increased nearby resident i a l development and the plans to build a new joint campus for Carnbroe, Sikeside and St Stephen’s primaries on nearby land to the west.

In the wake of the planning refusal, they added: “As a precaution, our agents will start discussions with the council over the extensive m i t i gat i o n w o rk s which the education department will require to carry out on the school site.

“This includes a 200m ‘no build’ buffer zone between any school and a licensed waste site.”
