Gift for newborns

Monklands mumsto-be expecting their bundles of joy on or after August 15 are being encouraged to register to receive one of Scotland’s new baby boxes.

The Scottish Government will be distributi­ng packs to containing essentials for newborns’ early months; including clothes, blankets, books, changing mat, bath towel, bib and thermomete­r.

Fulton MacGregor, the Coatbridge & Chryston MSP –who has recently welcomed baby son Ruan to the family – said: “All mothers need to do to be gifted a baby box is apply through their midwife in advance, supplying their preferred delivery address.

“The Scottish Government is proudly gifting a box to every child in Scotland to help tackle deprivatio­n, improve health and support parents – to ensure that every child has an equal start in life.

“Boxes are full of useful items, while also providing a safe space for babies to sleep near their parents; to promote bonding and early attachment and send a signal that every child, regardless of their background, matters.”

Neighbouri­ng MSP Alex Neil is also encouragin­g expectant mums in his Airdrie & Shotts constituen­cy to register for a baby box.

He added: “With the new powers coming to Scotland, we will also provide targeted support to help low-income families via our maternity and early years allowances.”

The new Best Start grants, due to be introduced in 2019, will provide expectant mothers on low incomes with £600 for their first child, £300 for second and subsequent children, and further £250 grants when children start both nursery and school.
