And walking to the stadium it was clear the audience were intent on making it exactly that.
Glam rock outfits, feather boas, platform boots, and of course an abundance of the star’s over-sized specs were everywhere. It was like stepping back in time. And that’s exactly what around 14,000 fans did when the Rocket Man took to the enormous stage just before 7.30pm and launched into The Bitch is Back to herald a blistering two-hour set that delivered hit after hit. Even the weather was kind, and despite occasionally being hidden by clouds, the sun stubbornly refused togotogo down for the duration of the performance. And performance it was. An icon for decades, in more recent times the 70-year-old has been elevated to the status of national treasure.
However, it’s not until you see him strutting his stuff on stage that you realise just how special an entertainer he is.
Resplendent in a pair of his signatureg diamond-encrusted sunglasses, red pumps and a spectacular sparkling black and red frock coat, Elton could never be described as understated.
