Chantelle’s so proud of award

Youngest volunteer to gain honour

- Judith Tonner

Craigneuk and Petersburn Action for Kids was among the award winners at the recent celebration of learning held at Gartlea community centre.

The organisation was recognised for its community work over the past year, which includes running a weekly youth club plus a busy summer programme – currently taking place once again during the school holidays for a third year.

Volunteers were presented with a certificate at the celebration event by Airdrie South councillor Sandy Watson; and there was also an award for 12-year-old Chantelle Mooney, a pupil at Airdrie Academy, who is the group’s youngest volunteer.

Action for Kids group founder Debbie Spiers said: “We set up our programme of youth clubs every week and a programme through the holidays, including outings and trips.

“We also have young people volunteering with us as part of their Duke of Edinburgh’s award, lots of whom keep coming after they’ve completed it.

“At the moment we have around eight teenage volunteers with us, and each week around 30 to 40 children attend the youth club.”

The group is currently running weekly activity sessions at New Broomfield throughout the school holiday, and all children aged three to 12 are welcome to attend.

Sessions take place at the Airdrie venue each Monday from noon to 3pm; entry costs £1, plus tuck shop.
