The sun is beating down, you have a refreshing cocktail in hand and you’re chilling... but how do you stay looking really cool while you’re lounging at the pool?

Finding make up to wear on a sweltering day is a tricky one for a lot of women as there is a lot to consider.

You want it to last but don’t want to feel it on your skin. You want to look natural and glowing, not a sweaty mess.

You also want your eye make to stay put and not melt away in the heat or wash off in the pool.

Here are a few tips to help you stay fresh in the summer sun and looking stunning all holiday long.

 Keep any foundation to an absolute minimum and conceal instead where necessary.

Water-based foundations are far more long lasting and hydrating e.g. MAC Face and Body foundation or Make up Forever Water Blend. These foundations are waterproof but also look so natural and dewy.

The best way to apply is with a stipple brush to buff the foundation on to the skin. The more you buff, the better the glow. This should only take minutes.

You can also go a little darker because they are so lightweight so it’s a great way to banish that white Scottish skin while you’re living La Vida Loca.

Tinted moisturisers are great too but offer very little coverage if you require it. The water-based ones feel lighter.

 Waterproof chunky eye liners which double up as eye shadows are a must for summer. There are so many to choose from but I love Bobbi Brown as there are some great neutral shades.

A sweep of colour along the lid is just enough to lift you and it will not budge.

You can swim wearing these and they will be perfectly in place when you finish your refreshing dip.

I don’t want to look like I’m wearing eye make up on holiday which is why I love the more neutral tones, but they have darker tones too if you prefer.

A darker tone along the top lash line is perfect to enhance your eyes without looking too “done”.

 I’m not a big fan of waterproof mascaras, but if you have long lashes they can be a great choice for the hot weather.

I prefer to get lash extensions because the difference they make is incredible.

Your lashes look long, thick and dark and frame your eyes beautifully. A perfect choice for holidays.

 Liquid lipsticks do work. They really last but I find them a bit drying so on holiday I prefer a sheer lipstick which just gives a wash of colour.

 Highlighter looks stunning with a tan. But don’t go crazy with it or you’ll end up looking too shiny and sweaty. It’s supposed to be subtle. A liquid/ creme texture is better for summer skin.

I love NYX Born to Glow liquid illuminator. Apply it to the highest point of your cheek bones and put some in your body moisturiser for a lovely glow on your beautifully tanned limbs.
