This image from the June 5, 2002, Advertiser sees golfers able to hone their skills to a tee, no matter the weather, thanks to a six-figure boost.

Ai rdrie G o l f C l u b installed United States Golf Association standard greens costing £185,000.

Head greenkeeper David Skinner – pictured with senior assistant Stuart Cameron and first assistant Eddie Waddell – introduced a two-year project to revamp the 125-year-old club’s greens.

He said: “The biggest bane of our members’ golfing careers over the last few years has been the amount of golfing days lost to the weather.

“Basically the old greens could no longer cope with the amount of heavy rain we have had at the course over the last decade.” Cash-converters got on their bikes to do their bit for a worthy cause close to our hearts back in 1989.

Moira Cochrane and Pauline McLachlan are pictured in the August 4 paper of that year with a £1300 cheque from Airdrie Savings Bank for a charity campaign run by the Advertiser. The cash was donated to the Heart Start appeal to buy defibrillators for Monklands Hospital’s ambulances, with the employees saddling up for a sponsored cycle in Millport.

Also pictured are Marjorie Winckler, Celeste McLaughlin, Mary Mitchell, Marielle Lawson, Iain Walker, Brian Byrne, Stuart Ritchie and Karl Moyes.
