Young stars in success

-

The Airdrie and District Darts League hosted the Glasgow Fair Open last week.

The holiday Monday brought a break from the Summer League and the one-off tournament was organised for all interested players.

Players from Kirkintilloch, Blantyre and Motherwell joined the Monklands players, and it provided more evidence that the next generation of players are now breaking through.

With Stevie Carson taking the regular singles titles and youngsters coming through, champions like Derek Cunningham, Graham Anderson and Ernie Brown may well struggle to stay at the top of the tree.

The final was contested between Jonathan McIntyre, who defeated Anderson, and Paul Cushen, who had put some decent Glasgow league players to the sword in the early rounds.

Cushen had always been decent, but the upgrade in McIntyre’s performances during the last month have been incredible.

He went into the final as favourite having came out on top over Alan Henry of Carsons.

Cushen got the better of Steve McInally in his last four tie.

It was McIntyre though that started best in the final with a stunning 15-dart win to keep up his good work.

However, Cushen came back in some style with a 180, as well as a 17-darter and 20-darter, to go in front.

He then took the final leg with a 105 checkout. ● The Annual General Meeting of Airdrie and District Dart League will take place on Monday August 7 at 7pm in Airdrie Workmen’s Club. Any new teams should be represented.
