Dalziel proud in defeat

-

Director of football Gordon Dalziel was full of praise for the Airdrie youngsters despite defeat to Livingston.

Goals in either half from Dylan Mackin and captain Craig Halkett were enough for the Lions to ensure they kept hold of top spot in Group H, although the final margin could have been much greater had they taken a host of chances.

However Dalziel, who is leading the Diamonds with the help of coach Donald Jennow, was delighted with the attitude shown by the squad.

Apprentices John Higgins, Cammy Russell, Dean Cairns all started the game, with Robbie Leighton, Murray Loudon and Scott Thomson all coming off the bench.

Captain Marc Fitpatrick was missing after picking up an injury against Stranraer last week.

“We knew it was going to be very tough,”said Dalziel following the defeat at the Tony Macaroni Stadium.

“We’re in a position that we have got young apprentices playing that aren’t ready to play at this level but you can’t fault their effort and commitment.

“It’s an education for us and I hope that the young kids can learn from this.

“They’ve gone out and worked hard and not disgraced themselves.

“The attitude and commitment is absolutely first class and they should be applauded for that.”
