Brophy to take on his former sparring mate Boxer set for fight night with Rocky

- Mark Pirie

David Brophy says he doesn’t fear being the villain once as he looks to add the British title to his Commonwealth crown.

The Caldercruix boxer is set to go up against his old sparring partner Rocky Fielding in a two-belt battle in Liverpool next month.

The 27- year- old will put his Commonwealth title on the line and British super-middleweight Fielding also has his gold up for grabs at the Echo Arena on September 30.

The fight night, dubbed the ‘Battle on the Mersey’, will see Paul Butler and Stuart Hall headline as the show is beamed across the globe on Sky Sports, and Brophy expects some “great fights”.

The bout will give 30- year- old Fielding home advantage. Brophy, however, says that he doesn’t care if the crowd boo him - as he already upset a home support to claim his Commonwealth title.

He travelled over 10,000 miles to shock the world and silence the home fans in his last fight and now wants to do it again.

“I’m expecting a hostile crowd and a lot of booing from the hometown crowd,” he told the Advertiser. “That doesn’t bother me at all. “When I went across to Australia to fight Zac Dunn the crowd in Melbourne were all on his side.

“The crowd were backing the Australian, and a lot of the press and pundits were only talking about him. Then I won.

“A lot of people will have to be learn from that and be careful not to write me off again.

“I’m going to leave with the British title and use it as another huge stepping stone.”

Brophy is currently in intense training, and admits it’s a strange feeling to come up against pal Fielding.

He had the chance to take on “easier” opponents as he looked to defend his title, but has backed himself to take the two belts back to Monklands.

He continued: “I have sparred with Rocky a few times so I know how good a fighter he is,”

“There was a few other fights on the table for my Commonwealth title, but I want to fight the best and challenge myself. There is no point in taking an easier fight.

“I’m going there to prove myself again and keep climbing the ladder.”
