Meeting on kirkwood traffic calls

- Judith Tonner

Kirkwood residents are continuing their battle for a crossing and traffic improvements on Woodside Street.

Roads officials, police and politicians met with locals on Friday at the Mitchell Street and Lismore Drive junction where neighbours want to see action taken.

It followed a petition and public meeting last month at which concerned attendees outlined their calls for traffic lights or a zebra crossing outside the area’s Tesco Express, to help pedestrians and to stop drivers flouting parking restrictions.

Organiser Ryan Scott said: “We’d like to appeal to people at the meeting to get back in touch with Kirkwood Watch about their concerns so we can make sure something is done about these issues.”

Council officials said last month as the second petition of the year on the issue was tabled that a traffic assessment is to take place this month, with its outcome and recommendations then going to councillors.

Double yellow lines on the road have recently been changed to single – but while locals are concerned that it will “cause a bigger issue”by appearing to relax traffic rules, North Lanarkshire officials insist that there is no change to the area’s no-parking restriction.

A council spokesperson said:“The restrictions on Woodside Street are no waiting or loading at any time, Mondays to Saturdays. This is indicated by single yellow lines and is enforceable.

“This restriction has always been the case; however, some sections of the road had double yellows incorrectly. These have recently been changed so that the markings are correct.”
