Five stars for Cairn character after big results

-

Gartcairn ...........5 Ashfield .............0 Mark Pirie Boss Davie Greig believes his Gartcairn players have shown what they are made of after smashing five goals past Ashfield.

A Mark Tait double book-ended goals from Alexander Amos, Kevin Ross and Scott McEwan as Cairn eased to a win over their Possilpark rivals, who had their keeper sent off.

After scoring 10 goals in their last two games, Greig was delighted to put the horror show against Vale of Leven two weeks ago well behind them.

Greig said his players“dominated” and that there are a lot of positives to take from the game.

“We looked at the game beforehand and thought it could have been tough,” he said. “We changed the system and it seemed to suit us and the way Ashfield play.

“We were comfortable and didn’t give them a lot of chances.

“There are a lot of positive points we can take from the game, but after the disappointment of the Vale of Leven game a couple of weeks ago, the boys have responded really well.

“They haven’t been negative. They have just kept going.”

The hosts took the lead after veteran striker Tait was brought down in the box. The clumsy tackle by the Ashfield keeper saw him sent off before Tait dusted himself down to slot the ball into the corner.

Alexander Amos, who left Ashfield in the summer, doubled the lead with a header and Kevin Ross met a good cross to make it three.

Sub Scott McEwan burst through the visitors defence and calmly scored, before Tait flicked the ball in to round off a fine display.

Greig is now keen to repeat their great form against struggling Dunipace this weekend.

Dunipace are still to register a point this season but the Cairn gaffer believes it is important that they keep up their high levels,

He said:“The games away from home are always that little bit more tricky.

“They have a lot to prove after four defeats in a row and will be hoping to start doing that on Saturday.

“We have started to get a few of the boys back from injury and we are playing well.

“We have to keep that up. There are no easy games in this league.”
