Awards for Airdrie butcher trio
A trio of Airdrie butchers produced sterling performances as they collected silver awards at the Scottish Craft Butchers’ prize giving.
Fergusons, of Buchanan Street, was honoured for its traditional steak pie, plus its steak and mushroom pie.
Also collecting two awards was Hugh Black & Sons, based on Hallcraig Street, who impressed judges with both their steak and haggis, and steak with chilli tomato, pie creations.
Graham Street business Crossan Butcher completed the roll call of silver awards, earning the accolade for its traditional steak pie.
The produce from the local firms was among more than 250 pies from across the country which were tested for appearance, flavour, filling and appeal during the heats held at Forth Valley College.
It was organised by the Scottish Federation of Meat Traders, and judges included experts, food writers and consumers.
Judith Johnston of steak pie evaluation sponsors Lucas Ingredients said:“These awards offer a fantastic opportunity to see our butchers’energy, enthusiasm and skill; their commitment to producing top-quality meat products points to a bright future for the industry.”
David Mooney of fellow sponsors William Sword added:“To receive an award is a fantastic achievement, as these winners represent the upper crust of the Scottish meat industry.”
