Folk legend takes to stage

- Jean Ward

Music fans are in for a real treat when Grammy award-winner Steve Poltz returns to Monklands.

Local promoters Intimate Gigs are bringing the acclaimed Californiabased folk musician to Berits & Brown next Saturday, October 7.

Hailing from Halifax, Canada, Steve has lived most of his life in Southern California, honing his craft.

He co-wrote the timeless ballad ‘ You Were Meant For Me’ with songwriter Jewel and amongst his fellow musicians he is regarded as one of the most talented and prolific songwriters around. His songs are among the longest running on the American Billboard Top 100 and have featured in movie sound tracks, television shows and commercials.

And he can even recall meeting Elvis Presley as a youngster, trick- ortreating at Liberace’s house, being Bob Hope’s favourite altar boy, and even accosting 70s teen idol David Cassidy, who had summoned him to Las Vegas to write a hit song.

His distinctive style makes him a favourite at festivals and venues worldwide, and his solo work is an impressive collection of ballads, rock and melodic acoustic numbers. Intimate Gigs’ Iain Strefford enthused: “In 30 years of putting on gigs, Steve is without a doubt the best solo performer I have seen.

“There really isn’t anyone like him.

“He is simply quite unique.”

Talented Airdrie singer songwriter Anton O’Donnell will open the Berits & Brown show with his band The Colts, who are due to release their second album.

Tickets for the show cost £ 10 and are available online at www.wegottickets.com/intimategigs, from Berits & Brown at Eurocentral and also from The Candy Store, Coatbridge.

Doors for the show open at 7.30pm.
