Pupils back hospice campaign

- Judith Tonner

Caldervale High’s senior pupils are the latest to get behind our new Advertiser campaign – to construct one of the new rooms at St Andrew’s Hospice.

School captain Greg McPake and house captains Sophie Hamilton (left) and Louise Sneddon were among the dozens of school pupils, community representatives and politicians who attended our Readers’ Room launch event last week.

All three, along with their classmates at the Airdrie school, have already taken part in a variety of events to support the Airdrie hospice and have hit the fundraising heights.

They said: “Our school does lots for the hospice – we all climbed Ben Nevis in the summer, and there were 57 of us taking part so we raised several thousand pounds between us.

“We were really pleased to contribute to a great cause.”

The Advertiser is asking its readers to help raise the thousands needed to construct one of the 21 new single rooms being created at the under-refurbishment hospice.

Our Readers’Room appeal is already off and running, with the first donations arriving via our online fundraising page at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/airdrieandcoatbridgeadvertiserhospice appeal – and Excelsior Stadium bosses Paul and Scott Hetherington ensuring it got off to a flying start by making a generous £5000 donation.

We are supporting the hospice’s capital appeal, which is bidding to raise £9 million for a complete rebuild of the hospice’s 30-year-old home at Henderson Street, with improved facilities for patients and families.

Advertiser editor Graham Miller said: “Our campaign is called the Advertiser Readers’Room Appeal for good reason – we can only achieve our goal with your help, and we hope readers will back this special campaign; each and every donation counts.”
