It adds up to success for Academy kids

-

Second-year pupils at Airdrie Academy divided their resources and brain power to impressive effect as they helped their school scoop the runner-up slot at a prestigious maths competition.

The class of multiple success stories joined almost 5000 other classes from schools across Scotland to compete in the Sumdog contest, held to celebrate maths week.

Each youngster involved had to get their heads around a series of problems and answer 1000 questions correctly — while playing interactive games — and the winning team was determined by a class average.

The Airdrie Academy group of maths whizz kids finished second out of 4901 classes, with star pupil Ryan Eckersley summing up their success by coming an impressive 10th out of a whopping 55,186 pupils taking part.

A spokesperson for the school told the Advertiser:“All of the pupils thoroughly enjoyed it and are asking when they can do it again.

“They did wonderfully well to come second out of thousands of classes across the country.

“Ryan was in spectacular form to finish as the 10th-placed pupil overall. Well done to him and the whole team!”
