Greenhill’s sum-thing extra special in contest

A Coatbridge school added an impressive achievemen­t after winning this year’s North Lanarkshir­e Council Maths Week Scotland Competitio­n.

Greenhill Primary secured £250 in prize money, which will be spent on maths and numeracy resources.

The contest saw pupils in schools across the region enjoy five days of fun activities focusing on the importance of “mathematic­s in nature, the world of work and everyday life”.

P1- 7 youngsters at Greenhill Primary came out on top after impressing with innovative tasks including a Captain Morgan’s Playground Treasure Hunt Challenge, parents and carers joining them in maths classes, assemblies, displays of pupils’ work and sharing the wide range of events via the school’s Twitter feed.

Dominic Kennedy, of the Scottish Attainment Challenge – Secondary and Numeracy Lead, organised the event and said afterwards: “Well done to our prize winners but, more importantl­y, to all staff and pupils across our schools who really embraced the challenge of Making Maths Count during Maths Week Scotland.

“Across many schools, parents and carers enjoyed opportunit­ies to join their children in a range of fun learning opportunit­ies within and beyond the classroom.

“In addition, a number of teaching staff from North Lanarkshir­e Council attended or delivered presentati­ons at the West Partnershi­p Maths Conference for teachers from eight local authoritie­s in Glasgow.”
