Talking Politics Greenbelt plan has me seeing red

-

Whilst there is always a case to build new and affordable social housing, this has to be balanced with the need to preserve some of our most precious and historical greenbelts.

That is why I’m strongly opposed to the proposed plan to develop the land between Carnbroe and Calderbank.

The Faskine and Woodhall woodlands are in real danger of being lost forever if the plans to build new homes, a shopping centre, cinema, offices and commercial units are approved.

The beauty spot is much loved by locals and those who travel from further afield to enjoy walking and exploring the many forest paths that run adjacent to the Monklands canal.

The historical ruins of the old cottage and the fact that many schools use the woodland gem as a way to introduce pupils to the marvels of nature must be preserved at all costs.

It is vitally important that the local community make their views known on this proposal that will all but join up Calderbank to Airdrie.

The Save Faskine and Woodhall group have ambitious plans to oppose this raid on the local greenbelt.

To achieve their goal, they will need your backing.

I am also running a survey on my website seeking your views on this development.

Please take a moment to fill in it in; it can be found at grahamsimpson.org/ Campaigns/Carnbroe and Calderbank

It is vitally important that you have your say.

Once the greenbelt is gone, it is gone forever.

Finally, the recent launch of the Advertiser’s campaign to ask readers to help fund the refurbishment of one of the rooms at the St Andrew’s Hospice has certainly caught the imagination of the local community.

Advertiser editor Graham Miller and his team came up with this brilliant idea and it is hoped that £55,000 can be raised.

Given the affection and regard the people of Lanarkshire have for the hospice, this is most certainly an achievable target.

Graham is looking to name the room after the people who read this paper.

They are the heart and soul of the community the hospice serves, and it would be a fitting gesture.

Can I ask you all to dig deep to ensure that this dream becomes a reality and one that you can all proudly share for many years to come.

Once the greenbelt is gone, it is gone forever
