The sound of hearty cheers filled the air as note-perfect performers were honoured at the Young Musician of the Year competition.

The finals of the prestigious contest, run by the Coatbridge, Airdrie and Monklands Rotary Club, took place in New College Lanarkshire’s Coatbridge campus.

Thirty-three talented musicians shone on stage as competitors from secondary schools across Monklands went head-to-head in five separate categories.

As well as performing in front of an engrossed audience, the youngsters had to impress judges Dominic Farr, Fiona Chapman and Michael McEneny.

The trio then had the unenviable task of selecting winners from each section, with the following pupils coming out on top – Sarah Spencer ( brass), Cara McGlone (vocal) and Eilidh Murphy (string) from Coatbridge’s St Ambrose High, Hope Sim (woodwind) of Caldervale High in Airdrie and Coatbridge High student Eve Cameron (piano).

Bill McMullen, past president of Coatbridge, Airdrie & Monklands Rotary Club, presented the quality quintet with their certificates and prizes.

The judges then had to select an overall winner and runner-up, choosing Hope Sim as the former and Eve Cameron the latter.

Hope will now go on to take part in the Rotary’s district young musician competition next February.

A spokesperson for the Rotary club said: “We are grateful for the support of all of the schools and their music departments, and also wish to thank the staff of New College Lanarkshire for their assistance.

“Thanks also go to the panel of judges and everyone who gave up so much of their time to make the young musician of the year competition such a fabulous success.”
