W/D enjoy big win over Clydebank

-

W/D .................... 29 Clydebank............. 3 Rugby Waysiders/Drumpellier coach Steven Conroy praised his fantastic side as they romped to victory over Clydebank.

In the first couple of minutes it seemed as if Clydebank had come out all guns blazing and were camped in the W/D 22.

After five minutes Clydebank got close to the line and were awarded a scrum. Their big pack exerted enough pressure to force a penalty, but rather than take the easy kick at goal, they opted for another scrum - with the same outcome.

Again, they passed up the option to get points on the board and took the third scrum in quick succession. This time it didn’t go to plan and the Langloan men turned the ball over.

A quick pass from Josh Wilson to Kyle Christie allowed him enough time to put in a thunderous clearance kick.

After 13 minutes W/D were awarded a penalty on the Clydebank 10 metre line and Gordon Milne’s effort was just wide.

The next 15 minutes were largely forgettable as neither side could get into their rhythm.

On the half-hour mark Clydebank squandered a fairly easy penalty kick, but five minutes later made no mistake to take a narrow lead into the break.

The second half started with a bang as Clydebank marched the ball into W/D territory. However, some fantastic counter rucking allowed the home outfit to turn over possession.

The ball was shipped to Christopher McCaffer who made one of his trademark runs to get the home side into Clydebank territory.

The forwards took over and hit up after hit up got them to the goal line.

With the backs all lined up for an attack, Matty Coey spotted a gap in the visitors’defence and dived over for a deserved try.

Coey quickly got his second try after some sterling teamwork got W/D close to the line and Clydebank conceded a penalty.

His quick tap-and-go caught them off guard and he dived over again.

From the restart W/D gathered and shipped the ball to Christie who lobbed the ball forward for Jay Weir to chase.

He hacked the loose ball towards the try line, but was tackled off the ball and the referee rightly awarded a penalty try - with W/D then converting the penalty.

Clydebank then appeared to unravel, as their lock appeared to headbutt Ross Ferguson and he retaliated. Both were lucky only to be shown yellow cards and not red.

A minute later the big Clydebank prop was given a yellow card for dissent. W/D took advantage of the extra man advantage and really started to turn the screw.

The pressure paid off when the ball was recycled quickly from a ruck and Charlie Smith made a brilliant pass to Anthony Campbell for the bonus point try in the corner.

W/D’s second yellow card came courtesy of Lee McGowan, who was sent to the sin-bin on 65 minutes for a high tackle.

McGowan made amends in the last play of the game when he benefited from more W/D pressure to dive over.

This time it was nearer the posts and Power duly converted.

Coach Conroy said:“It was a fantastic team performance by the boys. After a scrappy start we stuck to our game plan and blew Clydebank away.

“The boys’defensive effort was outstanding, only conceding three points in two games.”
