Cool Carsons on cloud nine with trophy win

Top two in league battle out final

- Staff reporter

Airdrie and District Darts League champions Carsons recovered from their league blip by claiming the NineMan Trophy.

The Coatbridge team kicked off against The Swan, with the Workmen’s B tackling last week’s heroes The Post from Calderbank on the other side of the draw.

In the first tie The Swan put up a great show in an event which featured a triple, three pairs matches and nine singles games - with the first to seven legs the winner.

Jim Parker hit a 180 in the triple to get The Swan away to a flier, but Derek Cunningham and Graham Anderson took the first pairs game to level the tie.

The return of Jim McGeary and his old sparring partner Ernie Brown put Carsons in front but The Swan took the last pairs game to level.

Davie Raeside then put The Swan in front with a 19- darter, however Anderson made sure the celebrations were short-lived when he shot a 16-darter to tie the game again.

Parker put The Swan in front for Brown to level matters again.

Ian Weir then made it 5-4 to the Chapelhall team with a good 20-dart win before Cunningham rose to the challenge with a 16-dart win.

The Swan found themselves in the driving seat when Gordon Lauchlan won in 18-darts and a shock was on the cards.

But their hopes were shattered when Harry Edwards and Frank Quinn both notched 19-dart wins to put Carsons in the final.

In the other last four tie The Post were well up for the job of taking on the Workmen’s B.

Cammy Reynolds, with a 110 finish, put the B Boys in front after the triple but Kenny Campbell and Tommy Rodman levelled the match.

Tam Ferguson and Gerry Brown levelled before Gary Stone’s 14-dart win put the Workmen in front and they cruised to the win.

It was old foes Carsons and the Workmen’s B who lined up in the final and the finishing of the B team deserted them when they needed it most.

Quinn Edwards and Steve McInally put Carsons in front after the triple.

Brown and McGeary were in top form and made it 3-0 while McBride and Steven Reid secured the doubles win.

Gary Stone gave the Workmen some hope with a 15-dart win - but the job was beyond them.

Cunningham, Brown and McGeary sealed the victory over the current darts league leaders. RESULTS for Monday, November 20: Nine-Man Trophy: Semi-final: Carsons 7 The Swan 5, Workmen’s B 7 The Post 3. Final: Carsons 7 Workmen’s B 1.
